Natural disasters are on the rise, largely because of the effects of climate change. Over the past few years, there have been natural disasters on a global scale: massive wildfires in California, flash floods in Germany, and extreme typhoons in the South Pacific, amongst many other meteorological calamities. When natural disasters strike, it is human nature to want to assist the victims and alleviate their suffering. Here are three ways to help others during natural disasters:
1. Donate blood: Casualties mount quickly during natural disasters, and many patients find themselves in dire need of medical attention such as blood transfusions. Medical providers are unable to store blood for long periods of time because of its short shelf life, which means that there is a profound need for donors when disasters strike. When an earthquake destroys rural villages or hurricanes flood suburbia, responders rushing to aid the victims need blood. Donating blood can be done through medical non-profit organizations working on-site, such as the International Red Cross or Doctors Without Borders.
2. Give money: The best way to assist the victims of a natural disaster is to donate funds to organizations who are working in the stricken area. These organizations are familiar with the needs of the local communities, and they know how to best source the needed items. They can quickly access and deliver the necessary items, whether people need water, culturally appropriate meals, clothing, tents, or any number of things that outsiders may not be aware of. To provide this type of rapid response, however, groups need money. People who desire to help the victims of natural disasters can make a huge impact by donating money to aid groups specifically providing relief for a natural disaster, such as the recent tsunami in Tonga or the mudslides in Brazil.
3. Volunteer to help: Supporters who have specific skills, such as medical professionals or search and rescue organizations, can play an invaluable part in providing assistance after a natural disaster. It is important to coordinate with the appropriate local authorities or aid organizations prior to arriving in a natural disaster zone, as this will allow one to work in coordination with others who are also performing life-saving actions. Serving as a field-based volunteer in an emergency is enormously rewarding, and it allows victims to receive more care and compassion.
